Ep 24 - Calla Lily
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
In this episode the Calla Lily literally takes centre stage!....well nearly! ..... With its stand alone attitude and wide range of really art deco and oriental colours, the Calla Lily can take your breath away. Often used on its own, it never fails to steal the show.
But wait a minute!... there is only one thing that could eclipse this beauty on stage and that is the extremely talented actor Bonnie Langford. In her wonderful contribution to this podcast, Bonnie shares the story of how she had to literally balance on a platform on stage, whilst performing one of her most iconic songs as the lead in the hit West End Musical 42nd Street. A Musical that the Fabulous Flowers tv duo Paulie and Lucy made it their business to see several times! I think Paulie might have been counting up to just shy of twenty visits by the last performance ( which he also attended of course)!
Behind Bonnie Langford, on that West End Stage, .....what's there?... you've guessed it.... a huge vase of Calla Lilies. But were they Faux or Real?....... listen and find out. Bonnie also shares her blooms of choice for her vase at home if she were having a dinner party. What a treat having Bonnie on the podcast. A truly valued and uplifting contribution.
Paulie tells a marvellous Claridges Hotel story from a past party using Calla Lilies with Crystal Candelabras and Bakelite Chandeliers and a disastrous ladder incident. He also shares the tale of a Cala Lilly decorated wedding where a large amount of cash went missing during the speeches and the resulting conclusion to this story will make you wince!
The Arum Lily is the only white Lily within this family of Calla Lilies. It has wonderful connotations with births, marriages, deaths and now beginnings. Find out what messages are associated with this pure, white and perfect bloom and even its place within the stories in the Bible.
If it's your 6th Wedding Anniversary this year, or someone you know, then the Calla Lily is the gift to give as it marks this anniversary.
Paulie imparts helpful and interesting planting tips if you'd like to grow these beautiful Lilies yourself. There's really a lily for every garden and pot and terrace and planter!
Fabulous Flowers tv Floriography Fun Facts this week are all about Steel Grass in its interesting and striking green loftiness, and also Marigolds.
Paulie tells of how he uses Steel Grass in so many innovative and wow factor ways to enhance displays arrangements and create a super contemporary look when required.
And did you know that Marrigolds are in fact the bloom for the month of October? With their Autumnal colours and bright disposition they carry incredible messages for all October birthdays. Why not send someone a gift of a packet of seeds in their birthday card and make it Marigolds if they are an October baby.!

For our Floriography focus this week, Lucy and Paulie wax lyrical on all things Hops. That wonderful autumnal bounty that can be found for picking in British hedgerows and ordered through any florist for use in many spectacular ways. They lend themselves so beautifully to decorations, table extravaganzas and mantlepiece awnings.
While Paulie shares some incredible stories of how he uses Hops for his amazing floristry work, Lucy uncovers facts about the medicinal, soporific and even flavoured recipe possibilities with Hops and finds out that they are rather quirky in the way they grow too. But take care when you’re near them as they can cause adverse reactions to some.
Did you know that Hops can help you sleep? You can use them for this purpose in many different ways: You can eat them, drink them in tea, pop them under your pillow, smoke them and if all those fail, then you can simply drink them in a few pints of your favourite beer! Any which way - you're bound to have a restful nights sleep.
